The New Testament states that "God is love" (1 John 4.8), a sentiment repeated in various ways by all spiritual traditions. The Aramaic Gospel of Peace of Jesus Christ adds that Mother Earth is also love , and so is the Son of Man. The Son of Man is a Jewish phrase that does not refer only to Jesus, but to human beings generally. Love is the power that unites Father, Mother, and Son together. It links spirit, matter, and humanity.
The ancient Greeks saw Eros, the god of love, as the firstborn of the gods. The Hindu Atharva Veda sees love as even higher than the gods. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna, who is an embodiment of the Supreme Being, declares that love is his innermost nature. The Buddhist Gandavyuha Sutra sees compassion as the essence of Buddhahood. The Mahaparinirvana Sutra states that compassion is Brahma (God) and the Tathagata (the Buddja). It is the bodhi path - the way to intuitive knowledge of truth.
Jewish scripture teaches that to love God we should always act lovingly. It tells us that we should love God whether God brings us what we desire or what we hate - even death. Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakki listens to many descriptions of the "good way," but approves the simple formula of having a good heart, for in this all other descriptions of the way are included. If the heart is open to love, it is open to God.
Christ preached the way of love. In the New Testament the disciple John tells us that God is love and without love we may not know God. Through loving others we can experience that He has given us his spirit - that God lives in us and we live in God. If we cannot love our fellow human whom we can see, John asks, how can we ever begin to love the invisible God?
In his beautiful letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul eulogizes love as the greatest of all qualities. Spiritual powers, great knowledge, sacrifice, and the faith to move mountains are all of no value compared to love. All such things are imperfect and will pass away, but love alone is perfect and enduring. Only love truly connects us to God.
