    --- Fate and Free Will
Most scriptures teach us that we have moral freedom and should choose to act well. Many, however, also teach that God is all powerful and predestines everything by divine will. Every religion wrestles to make sense of this profound paradox.
Some scriptures suggest that while the external conditions which we encounter in our lives are preordained by God, our internal reactions to them are not. Human life is the interaction of fate and freedom of choice. We cannot control the world, but we can control our responses to it. In the face of such knowledge, spiritual seekers should cultivate an equanimous acceptance of all that God decrees. If God is creating their fate they can live without anxiety and fear, for everything is safely in the divine hands.
Free will is often seen as both the problem and the solution. We suffer because of our selfish desires and actions, which do not coincide with God's will. The spiritual use of free will is to freely give it up - to surrender the personal will to the will of God. Certain scriptures, however, see even this act of surrender as possible only by God's grace. Everything is an act of God, including our thoughts and actions. This sublime truth is obscured by the personal self which mistakenly believes that it is the "doer" and the "thinker." In reality, all is one and there is no independent personal self to be free or otherwise.
These arguments are really different perspectives on the same truth. From the perspective of the Oneness of God, there is no free will, because everything is the unfolding of one thing. From the point of view of the separateness experienced by unenlightened human beings, there is freedom of choice, because everything is the interaction of separate things. How can both be true? This is a mystical paradox which cannot be solved by the rational mind, but only dissolved in the experience of enlightenment.

"For not of your will were you formed,
and not of your own will were you born,
and not of your will do you live,
and not of your own will you'll die."
    (Judaism: Abot 4.29)

"Everything is foreknown, but man is free."
    (Judaism: Mishnah, Abot 3.19)

"The question as to when the union of soul with karma
occurred for the first time cannot arise, since this is a
beginningless relations like gold and stone."
    (Jainism: Pancadhyayi 2.35-36)
